Stop Lying to Yourself
We always lie twice. First to ourselves, then to the world. Practice striving for a better world by becoming true to yourself.
In most cultures, religions, and societies lies are considered sinful and bad behavior. Yet, even more disastrous than lying to our friends, families, and business partners are the lies we tell ourselves. Mainly to avoid leaving our comfort zones so we don’t have to expose our true selves and face the world.
Only once we’ve convinced ourselves with what we actually know better, we project the same lies to our surroundings. So if you want to change the world for the better, start with being honest with yourself. As brutally as possible.
- Why do you hate your job?
- Why don’t you get paid more?
- Why don’t you have any sex? And if you do, why is it unsatisfying?
- Why is your marriage a torture?
- Why do you still maintain your relationship?
- Why are you poor?
- Why do you smoke?
- Why do you drink?
- Why are you overweight?
- Why are you constantly angry?
- Why are you constantly hungry?
- Why can’t you focus on a single important task?
- Why don’t you have any friends?
If any of these questions hit you, congratulations! Truth is knocking on your door. Don’t hide up the stairs pretending nobody’s home. Take a deep breath, gather your courage, and tear the door wide open.
Here’s a hint: it’s never an external reason. The truth is, deep inside, you know the answers to all these questions—as far as they relate to you. Be your own guide. How? There’s really just two things you have to do:
- Ask the right question
- Listen
That’s it. The right question is the uncomfortable one you’ve been avoiding all along. And you listen by carving out the time and space necessary to exterminate all external distractions. Why is listening so difficult? Because you are distracted. The whole world is designed to distract you and keep you from discovering your ultimate truth.
Lying is often also an expression of disrespect. Have some respect for yourself! How is anyone ever to respect you if you don’t even respect yourself? The world is nothing but a mirror for your own perception. If the world constantly disrespects you, start to look within and give yourself some truth.
